Stand Up, Step Out (SUSO) Community Bus Gets A Makeover

Imagine for a moment being without a place to call home, with not even a bathroom or laundry with the basic amenities required to cleanse yourself and your clothes. Unfortunately, this is a daily reality for around 100,000 Australians. Enter SUSO.

Footprints is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a number of support services to a range of vulnerable community groups including the homeless. One of the incredible services they offer is ‘Stand Up, Step Out’ (SUSO) which runs out of a repurposed council bus, providing the homeless and disadvantaged population of Brisbane somewhere to go where they can have a shower as well as wash and dry their clothes. They also have access to Wi-Fi and mobile charging, skilled outreach staff that can provide support and referrals, and most importantly, someone to talk to and to listen in a safe environment.

The bus has been on the road operating since December 2017, but earlier this year got a fresh new vinyl wrap by GoTransit’s private vehicle wrapping division, Impact Wrap. This colourful, unmissable design welcomes our less fortunate population to a safe, supportive environment thanks to a joint partnership between Footprints in Brisbane, Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Action Groups (Sandbag) and One Voice, from Melbourne.

SUSO will work with existing organisations to complement the services already present in the area. The service is currently operating in Wynnum, Capalaba and Clontarf, with the ability to reach other areas in the future. As the program is not funded, SUSO relies on the support of volunteers, grants and donations, and it is a program that is doing incredible work helping those who need it most. We are proud to support organisations like Footprints, helping them to do their invaluable work in our community.
